A block puzzle online where the kind of square matters

This block puzzle will run in the browser and inside Telegram, with nothing to install. The board is a grid of light and dark squares. The pieces are shapes made of light and dark squares too. Your job is to fill the whole board, and there is one rule. A square of a piece only goes on a board square of the other kind. Dark goes on light and light goes on dark. Dark squares carry a dot, so the rule never depends on color alone.

Unlike block puzzles where you clear lines for as long as you can, this is a puzzle with an end. The pieces were cut from the board, so a full cover always exists. You have to find it.

Pieces never turn or flip. What you see in the tray is how the piece goes on the board.

From level 1 to 15

The board grows from 4×4 on levels 1 and 2 to 5×5, then 6×6, and 7×7 from level 11. Pieces grow from 2 or 3 squares at the start to 4 or 5 on the last two levels. Level 1 has 6 pieces, levels 11 to 13 have 12, and the last two have 11.

Each level uses one of three board patterns, and each pattern changes where pieces fit.

On a checkerboard every piece is a checkerboard too, so it can only go where every square lands on the opposite kind and the space is free, which is every other position. On these levels the main task is fitting the shapes together.

On stripes the board is split into rows or columns of one kind, one or two squares wide. A piece now fits only on rows or columns of the right parity, so the choice of places shrinks.

On patches the board is broken into irregular areas of each kind. Pieces come out lopsided and fit in very few places. Level 14 has narrow stripes and level 15 has patches.

How it plays

The tray shows up to four pieces at a time. Pick one, tap the board to see where it would land, and tap inside that outline to place it. When a piece goes on the board, the next waiting piece takes its place in the tray.

If you get stuck, take a piece back. With no piece picked, tap a placed piece and it returns to the tray, free. This lets you undo an early placement that blocks the remaining pieces.

A piece placed on squares of the same kind, or over another piece, costs a life. The preview shows you where it goes before you commit, so a mistake is a decision, not a slip. When all three lives are gone the level ends and your points are kept.

On a keyboard, keys 1 to 4 pick a piece, the arrows move it, Enter places it and Esc puts it back. With a mouse the outline follows the pointer.

How the points work

The first time you place each piece you get 10 points plus a speed bonus of up to 10. The bonus depends on the time since your previous scoring placement, or since Start for the first one, and drops by about one point each second. Placing a piece again after taking it back earns nothing, so the best score on a level is 20 points per piece, 120 on level 1.

Points and your best show how you did in this game. We do not claim that it improves anything outside the game.

What is a good result

We have no player norms yet and will not make them up. You can compare your cleared levels by the lives you had left, then try to beat your previous score on the same level.

Tips

Look for the pieces that fit in the fewest places and try them first. On patch boards the lopsided pieces tend to have the fewest places.

Try filling corners and edges early. Every piece has at least two squares, so a single empty square cut off from the rest can never be filled.

On stripes one square wide, look at the pattern of the piece first. When the stripes run across, a piece whose top row is dark can only start on a light row. When they run down, the same goes for its left column.

Count what is left. When the empty area has a shape none of the remaining pieces can make, take a piece back now rather than later.

Questions

Is this block puzzle free?
Yes. Levels 1 to 5 will be free in the browser and in Telegram, with no download. The full version opens all levels for a one-time payment, with no subscription.
Can I rotate the pieces?
No. Pieces never turn or flip. Turning would make the pattern easier to match, and it would need one more control on every input.
Is there always a solution?
Yes. The pieces are cut from the board, and before a level starts a solver checks that they cover it.
Is it like Blockudoku?
Only in that you place blocks on a grid. There are no lines to clear here. You fill one board completely, and every square of every piece has to land on the opposite kind.
What happens if I get stuck?
Tap a placed piece to take it back into the tray. It costs nothing, and you can rearrange as much as you need.
